Katie Holmes's Studded Denim Trench Coat Is Why This Outfit Works
At Harper’s Bazaar, we’re constantly asking: What exactly makes a good outfit a good outfit? In our column Why This Outfit Works, an editor dissects the anatomy of a look, zeroing in on the one specific piece (or pieces) that pull the entire ensemble together.
We’ve officially reached peak denim. The renaissance of the utilitarian textile in all its forms—brought back in the form of a cowboy suit by Beyoncé, a Y2K skort by Taylor Swift, and in a ’90s midi skirt by Gisele Bündchen—has led us here, to Katie Holmes’s fabulous vintage denim trench coat.

The actor stepped out Monday in New York City in a look that was true to her minimalist style, but sprinkled with wildly interesting staples. The crème de la crème, of course, was the trench: a double-breasted, old-school Chloé coat with a vintage finish, notched collar, long belt, and pockets, plus silver buttons and eyelet studs all over.
At one point, the piece retailed for $5,555, but it now seems to be sold out everywhere. Chloé does, however, have a non-studded version of the trench, available at various retailers and currently on sale at the Outnet and Mytheresa.
Holmes layered the unique trench over a classic black scoop-neck top and loose black pants, which she wore with the coolest glossy black Mary Jane ballet flats. These had a thick strap at the top and a pretty little bow at the front of the rounded toe.

The Rare Objects director finished the ensemble with three accessories she cannot stop wearing: Mansur Gavriel’s spacious Everyday Soft Tote in black with a red inner lining, rectangular black shades, and her silver nose ring. She also added a dainty gold necklace. She had her brunette hair down in a straight blowout and seemed to wear minimal, rosy makeup, including a glossy pink lip.
